Do you ever feel like Grammar and Sentence mechanics done the Charlotte Mason way is beyond your reach? Do you feel as if you are trying to teach something that you yourself have little idea of how it works – and without a textbook or manual you are drowning in a sea of worry?
We did. We have been working at the Charlotte Mason approach for some time now–and we have not seen much progress with our son. His writing does not seem to still pattern after the great books he reads. His sentences look as though he has rarely looked at a complete thought of words a day in his life, sometimes. Every now and then he types something and/or writes something that gives me and my wife hope. We are facing a clock on the wall, that has been frosted over and you can see time passing, but not clearly.
We prayed long and hard and kept searching and searching–FINALLY! Eureka! We were shopping at the homeschool store and came across a used set of books, Grammar 5 by Sonlight. I have LOVED sonlight from the first day we started homeschooling–my wife on the other hand is a totally different story. I fell in love with their approach, but then realized that our greater desire for a delight directed core essential Masonite style program was the right path. The Grammar 5 and Grammar 6 books are the answer to our prayers.
I have a few pictures of the books — we did not buy the used copies however. Since I have never purchased an actual sonlight kit, I feel some strange sense of duty to purchase these brand new from Sonlight, as a way of honoring the company that sparked our interest in the Charlotte Mason approach.
What I Love About this Series
This is simple. It is a straight forward approach to the Charlotte Mason method–only you get the reasons why and how behind the process. Your children read and dictate this wonderful paragraph from great literary works. Then, almost immediately, there is a reason for why the comma here, the semi-colon there, an em dash here and so on. It’s like, they took the copywork and dictation and added the teacher stuff right next to it. Now you get the best of both worlds. Look at some of the photos.
The next few pictures will show you the teacher guidebooks and answers. And the pages themselves actually help you clearly know how to work with the paragraph/copywork and dictation exercises. We are very pleased with the level of both Grammar 5 and Grammar 6 by Sonlight. If you want a Charlotte Mason Grammar Approach that makes sense and takes the ocean of fear and replaces it with a sea of joy and progress… allow the floodgates to open and go get these two books.
